Bespoke Travel vs. Luxury Travel: What’s the Real Difference?

I have a secret to share… I didn’t know what bespoke travel was until about two weeks ago. I was trying to find a word to describe elevated travel, that wasn’t necessarily luxurious. I went on ChatGPT and asked it to put a word to what I was imagining – and boom. I discovered bespoke travel. I realized that I have been traveling like this my entire life, and I never knew what it was.

Bespoke travel is a personalized experience that fit an individual’s wants and needs. It’s not about lavishness—it’s about intention, authenticity and crafting moments that feel made just for you.

While bespoke travel can still come at a higher cost, its true value lies beyond the price. Rather than paying for a name or brand, you’re paying for unique experiences thoughtfully crafted around you as a person.

For my fellow visual learners, I have created a chart to help understand the difference between Luxury and Bespoke

    ExperiencePremium but predictableUnique and tailored

    Breaking it down

It is easy to see that Luxury Travel is centered around the “best of the best,” like staying at a 5-star resort or eating at a Michelin-star restaurant. Luxury tends to cater towards pre-fixed itineraries and excursions, high-end amenities, first-class flights, and 5-star hotels.

Yet, Luxury travel can still feel impersonal or one-size-fits-all. Bespoke Travel is catered to your individual needs and desires. While it can still be luxurious, it is high-end in different aspects. I’m talking private chefs, custom itineraries, local guides, off-the-beaten-path moments.

    Real-Life Example

For example, while traveling with my family this past summer, instead of staying at a 5-star hotel, we stayed in a 12th-century apartment that was owned and lived in during the 1940s by the legendary French poet, writer and screenwriter Jacques Prévert. While our trip was still luxurious, it was catered to our specific needs. And it gave us a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

In my personal opinion, I would rather travel bespoke. Don’t get me wrong, a luxury resort is perfect for relaxation or when convenience matters (if anything, I took an all-inclusive resort vacation over spring break), but when you want to dive deeper into a destination, celebrate something special or just want to do something no one else has done, it’s time to start bespoke traveling.

I want you to ask yourself something… Have you ever taken a truly bespoke trip? Or is it on your bucket list?

If bespoke is something that is calling your name, I hope you stick around, and I can help you with all things bespoke travel.

Exploring the World at Any Age: A Closer Look at Road Scholar

When we think of education, we often picture classrooms, textbooks and students in their teens or early twenties. But for Road Scholar, the pursuit of knowledge has no age limit.

    Who is Road Scholar?

Road Scholar is a not-for-profit organization that calls itself a “university of the world for older adults,” and rightfully so. With a mission to inspire adults to learn, discover, and travel, they offer a wide variety of immersive travel programs that are as educational as they are unforgettable. Whether it’s taking a French Canal Voyage, spending Christmas in Sorrento or learning how to cook authentic Indian food with families in their home, every experience is real, and the world becomes your classroom.

    A Mission with Movement

At the heart of Road Scholar is a belief that learning should be lifelong and experiential. Their programs aren’t just about sightseeing—they’re about immersing yourself in culture and knowledge. Expert instructors lead each adventure, providing extraordinary access to information, local culture and behind-the-scenes experiences you won’t find in typical all-inclusive packages. The goal? To spark curiosity, encourage meaningful discussion and foster life long friendships among like-minded travelers.

Where They Shine (and Where There’s Room to Grow)

Road Scholar’s storytelling is heartfelt and authentic. They photographs of their travels and blog-style features highlighting their journeys. These elements bring their mission to life—but they could lean into storytelling even more. Making the stories of their travelers and educators more central to the homepage or social feeds would go a long way in building emotional connection.

    Social Platforms

Road Scholar is very intentional with how they use their social media accounts. With active Facebook and Instagram accounts, Road Scholar prioritizes the platforms where their 50+ audience is most likely to spend time. While their Instagram boasts an impressive 38.9k followers, engagement rates are surprisingly low at only 4.2%.

Their content is relevant and well-aligned with their audience, and their choice to skip platforms like TikTok and Pinterest was probably wise.

    The Bigger Picture

What makes Road Scholar stand out is not just the number of trips offered (there are many!), but the values behind them. They believe that learning is not something we age out of—it’s a lifelong journey. And in a world that often sidelines older adults, that’s a powerful message.

Road Scholar makes it a priority to do sustainable travel. This means respecting and preserving local cultures, conserving natural environments, minimizing waste and pollution, protecting wildlife, and making a difference. They have partnered with organizations such as TONTOTON to limit the amount of plastic used in their programs. They also acknowledge the amount of CO2 that is created by flying, so to counteract they partake in carbon offset projects such as Wind energy in the Dominican Republic, Clean cookstoves in India and Nitrous oxide abatement in Florida. All of their contributing equalling 400,000 seedlings being planted (and growing for 10 years)!

    Final Thoughts

Road Scholar isn’t just a travel company—it’s a movement that redefines what it means to get older. They’ve built a platform where knowledge and adventure go hand in hand, and where curiosity is the ticket to exploring the world. With a bit more intentionality in how they tell their story, they could reach and inspire even more lifelong learners across the globe.

  • Welcome to Bespoke Travel!

    Welcome to Bespoke Travel!

    Because cookie-cutter traveling is boring.

Hi, I’m Ava — a 21-year-old Public Relations student with a well-worn passport and a lifelong obsession with meaningful, well-curated travel.

I started this blog as a way to share more than just pretty pictures I have taken. Over the last 13 years, I have been lucky enough to explore the world. Along the way, I’ve collected stories, learned lessons (sometimes the hard way), and developed a love for travel that’s personal, purposeful and anything but one-size-fits-all.

A few of the countries I have traveled to include: Costa Rica, France, Italy, Denmark, Ireland, Indonesia, the Netherlands, Spain, and Belgium. Each destination has taught me something new—whether it’s how to slow down and savor a moment or how to navigate unfamiliar places with curiosity and confidence

    Florence, Italy, 2022

    Here, you’ll find:

    • Itineraries that balance iconic landmarks with hidden gems
    • Real travel experiences and photos that I have taken— the dreamy, the chaotic and everything in between
    • How to find the best places to eat, from street food to Michelin-starred
    • And my honest takes on where to go, what’s worth it, and what’s completely overrated

This blog is for anyone wanting to travel deeper, not just farther. I hope this space gives you a little inspiration and a lot of realness.

Thanks so much for being here. Let’s explore the world on our own terms.

    With love, ava
